BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (1978) ABC Network Promo

From January, 1979, the ABC network promo spot for the Battlestar Galactica episode, "War Of The Gods, Part 1" (with guest star Patrick Macnee as Count Iblis)... and the last new episode of Glen Larson's The Hardy Boys Mysteries... narrated by the "Voice of ABC," the late, great Ernie Anderson!

  1. I like these old promos. Takes me back a bit. I still like the original Battlestar much better than the remake. By todays standards the storytelling was a bit tongue in cheek- by people who knew better than to take themselves too seriously. I still want to see what Starbuck and Apollo saw in that crashed ship that they wouldn't let Sheeba see (Space Babe Anne Lockhart). I've always wondered if there was some footage of it left on the cutting room floor.

    1. Not positive but I read the adaptation of this story when in came out and I'm pretty sure Starbuck and Apollo saw a "cloven hoof" as part of the description of what was in the ship. I'm pretty sure there were supposed to have been creatures resembling the devil.

  2. I'm glad you like these. I post these TV promos when I come across them because I find them - like vintage TV Guide ads and toy commercials - to be incredibly potent "memory triggers."

With almost all of thees shows and movies available now at a click of a button or a few keystrokes, it's these old advertisements that take me back to those childhood days even more than the programs themselves. Back when you really had to make an effort to see and keep up with your favorite TV shows, or beg your folks to drive you to the movie theater...

I know what you mean. Things like this bring back the past so strongly that I've downloaded hundreds upon hundreds of old commercial clips from YouTube before they get deleted. I have enough commercials to watch for days. Maybe when I'm old, retired and housebound and I have the time, I'll start recreating whole '70s evenings and even entire days (and Saturday mornings) with all these old shows and commercials.

  3. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You for posting these.. they're remarkable. I never got into the revised Galactica, none of the characters had any 'screen presence' like the original show did.

Just watched 'Collection Intervention' on the SYFY channel, about the CA comic dealer guy with 'largest Galactica collection'. Eh, it was alright (didn't see any Canadian Mattel LandRams..), but Richard Hatch stopped by his house, gave him some advice, THEN gave him his original Galactica script from 1978 (with color art sketches).

Way TOO cool (and a bit hard to believe..), but having talked with Hatch a few times, he's a pretty awesome guy.

  4. When Sci-fi announced they were remaking BattleStar the possibilities were endless. I could not wait. A continuation of the old with some cameo's from the originals. Maybe Apollo as the big chief. Starbuck stopping by or as his second in cammand. Awesome. And then they bastardized it.I was terribly disappointing. Nothing more than reusing the names and premise of one ship against robots. Things come and go, but the classics will live forever.

  5. The original Battlestar had so much potential. Even when they began shuffling characters I still thought it could be something special. A shame it didn't get another season to come into it's own.
