Issue #8 |
Join us as we once again venture into the domain of the downscale genre mags of publishing mogul
Myron Fass' Stories Layouts and Press Inc., purveyors of cheap newsstand fodder, with a second batch* of the lurid
Space Wars covers that beckoned seductively to our adolescent eyes
from the newsstand racks and tempted our meager allowances out of our
pockets. Starting with issue #8, Fass' editors/art directors switched away from painted covers to garish, sloppy photo montages, as you can see here....

I think I may have had one or two these back then. Now the covers look like a kid's collage to me, but back then I probably thought the magazine was going to have everything because the cover was so jam packed.

I just love (and loved) pictures of "star filtered" Cylons. In a big way it really is a representation of the 70's to me.
ReplyDeleteAhh, you don't see mags like this anymore do you? The cover of Issue #11 is particularly cheap looking. They've cropped half of Chewie's head off!
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, this kind of hectic layout sort of mirrors the era, when it seemed like something was happening in SF and fantasy everywhere you looked. Some was good, some was awful, but all in all, it was a blast, and I wouldn't have missed it for the world.
ReplyDeleteI want to know the story behind some of those headlines: "Captain Kirk battles Spock in New Star Trek" "Star Wars II: Darth VadAr vs. Obi-Wan Kenobi - The Great Rematch" "Secret Master Plan to Destroy Cylons" I need to know!
