GALAXINA (1980) Lobby Cards

I continue to have a soft spot in my heart (and head) for the 1980 Crown International comedy Galaxina. I honestly don't know why, except that it's part of the post-Star Wars space opera boom, and that, as awful as it is, I can't help but enjoy the damned thing. Anyway, here's a selection of Galaxina lobby cards that showcase the film's more interesting visuals, including Chris Walas' alien "rockbiter," the funky spaceship miniatures... and the admittedly stellar Dorothy Stratten as the titular android.

  1. Yeah, it's silly as hell, but I love this movie, too. Dorothy Stratten is so gorgeous in it, and her look is so perfectly 1980 somehow. I'm actually surprised that I've never seen the costume done at a con; I've only seen her done once, and oddly enough, it was at my wedding.

Five years ago this Wednesday (May 1), my husband and I had our Super Nerd Dream Star Trek/Sci-Fi Wedding on the bridge of the Enterprise D, at the now sadly gone Star Trek: The Experience in Las Vegas. As a longtime Trek costumer, it was my dream to do it up nerdstyle, so he was/is a Vulcan, and I was/am a Klingon. We told all of our guests (who were all costume freaks, too) that they didn't have to be Trek, as long as they were sci-fi. So my buddy decides that this is his perfect opportunity to fulfill a longtime nerd fantasy; he got his lovely girlfriend to make/wear a Galaxina costume. They repaired to their hotel room shortly after my reception in Quark's Bar was over, and didn't come out for days; he was/is a happy, happy nerd. ;)

    Cheers, thanks a lot,

    Storm the Klingon Bride

  3. IFC (How, pray tell, is it in ANY way still a channel for *independent* film?) has been playing "Galaxina" every few weeks for the past year or so, usually late Friday or Saturday night, uncut (but with commercials). I don't know if it's available on Netflix or not, but anyone who wants to see it should keep an eye out on the IFC schedule; check your local listings!

  4. My parents dumped my brother and me (6 and 10 years old respectively) into this movie while they went shopping. I think just just registered "sci-fi, that'll keep 'em happy..." and didn't think any more about it. Of course my brother and I were hungry for anything spacey and my eye for the ladies was starting to open. =Perfect.

I remember having a few laughs and getting some of the reference humour. Haven't seen it in ages though.

  5. Being an R-rated movie, I couldn't see Galaxina when it came out in 1980, so for years I could only imagine what it was like. When I finally did see it on video in the late '80s, I was pretty dissapointed. But like so many things from that period, it has a certain charm these days, as well as a home in my movie library.
