Courtesy of YouTube user "Greathall75," here is a nicely restored copy of MGM's nearly 8 minute-long advance featurette created to showcase the spectacle of their forthcoming sci-fi epic, Logan's Run.
This rare promotional film premiered on January 13, 1976 at the MGM owners meeting, held at the MGM studio in Hollywood, California. It was also shown to exhibitors at the National Association of Theater Owners convention in March of 1976.
Since it was never inteneded to be seen by paying audiences, it includes a number of what would now be considered "spoilers." It also contains clips from deleted scenes, as well as alternate camera angles of familiar sequences from the film. The music is from Ice Station Zebra (1968) as Jerry Goldsmith had not yet finished recording the Logan's Run score.
Enjoy.
Countdown: this is Space: 1970 post #997...
Oooh, I like the countdown! But what are we counting down to?
ReplyDeleteThe end of the world! Or just the 1000th post. Probably one of the two.
DeleteAnd that's not just spoilers. That was more like the abridged version of the movie.
I remember the original opening scene with Francis terminating the runner from the Marvel comic. Too bad this promo never made it onto any dvd/blu-ray release.
ReplyDeleteI did enjoy this Christopher. I enjoy seeing promotional and behind the scenes footage from the past. There was a formal quality to old time promotion that is missing from today's more informal world. Announcers were deep voiced guys and the things they promoted always seemed serious. Looking back at it from today, it sometimes seems quite melodramatic and even funny. But a part of me yearns for these old times.
ReplyDeleteTo go with this I thought you'd appreciate seeing the 1975 short film The Lion Roars Again. Starting around 2:32 is a segment on Logan's run. Look for a young David Hasselhof modeling a Sandman costume at the fashion show.

I ran the LOGAN segment of this here a while back.

ReplyDeleteOnly "a number"? I feel like I just watched the entire movie in 8 minutes. They gave away every single plot point, including the ending!
