I was surprised when I recently web-stumbled over this piece of
Buck Rogers art, because I'd never seen it before. It's signed by fantasy painter
Boris Vallejo - does anyone know where this appeared (if anywhere)?

I haven't seen this amazing piece in thirty years. Last time I saw it, it was in a production story on Buck Rogers in either Starlog or Cinefantastique. I'd trade some serious collectibles for a print of this!
ReplyDeleteYou can order a hand-signed print direct from Boris himself at http://www.imaginistix.com/details.cfm?Id=863
ReplyDeleteIronically, it's called "Flash"!
I believe it was art used for a re-issue of a Buck Rogers novel, re-released to cash in on the TV series. I'm sure I've seen the paperback with this cover, but a quick online search failed to locate it. The novelization proper of the 1978 pilot uses different art.
ReplyDeleteI remember it as a cover for some trade magazine - I think I have it buried in the stacks somewhere. If I find it I'll make a scan and send it to you...
ReplyDeleteThe reissue/rewrite (by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle) of Armageddon 2419 that came out in 1979 had this cover... http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51r27dnr4-L._SS500_.jpg
ReplyDeleteIt was the basis of a pretty damned good multi-novel spin-off series with no relation to the tv series.
There WERE two books that tied in to the tv series. One was a novelizaton of the movie/pilot.
The other, "That Man on Beta", was based on an unused teleplay.
Neither used the Boris art.
I recall someone was selling t-shirts adorned with this image on eBay a couple years ago. Really makes me wish I'd snagged one.
ReplyDeleteI remember seeing it as an Iron On in a shop waaaay back in the day.
ReplyDeleteI missed out on this poster recently on a toy forum, it sold for a measly $2. From a Pepsi/Burger King promo...awesome!

So... I guess this was a t-shirt. Okay.
