October's SpaceBabe is pretty Melody Anderson as New York City girl Dale Arden in 1980's Flash Gordon. I always thought that Ms Anderson was a remarkably appealing and attractive actress, and have often wondered why she didn't have a bigger career. Born in 1955 in Alberta, Canada, she possessed a decidedly wholesome sort of beauty, perfect for the role of quintessential, all-American Dale.
She was a familiar face on television series and in TV movies throughout the Eighties, and according to the IMDb, she retired from acting in the mid-90s, although she does make appearances at autograph shows and pop culture conventions. Aside from Flash Gordon, Melody showed up in small roles in episodes of Space: 1970 favorites Logan's Run and Battlestar Galactica, and was a regular on the infamous 80's cult show Manimal. She also starred in movies like Dead & Buried and Firewalker.
Apparently she became a substance abuse counselor after leaving showbiz.
Firstly, I take offense on refering to Manimal as "infamous". Why it has not been released on DVD is one of the great injustices of the world, but I digress.
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, I'm very fond of the lovely Ms. Anderson because she starred in two of my favorite 80's films, Flash Gordon (which I have on DVD) and the very underrated Dead and Buried (DVD forthcoming).
I#'ve had Dead & Buried on DVD here in the UK for a few years now !! Great film and so is Flash Gordon !!
ReplyDeleteDead & Buried has been on DVD here in the U.S. for years, and was released on Blu-Ray back in early '09.
ReplyDeleteIt *is* a pretty good horror film, and quite original. Melody is great in it - I do wish she'd made more features, but I guess in the 80s, her "wholesome" looks weren't in much demand.
