Presenting another illustration-heavy post to keep things going while I try to make time to wrap up some more substantial articles - in this case, a gallery of the covers to Charlton Comics' 7-issue, color
Space: 1999 comic book series.
The company also published a B&W magazine-format
Space: 1999 title, and I'll showcase those covers here one of these days, as well. The first two issues were drawn by my pal
Joe Staton, and the next four by on-the-verge-of-superstardom Marvel artist
John Byrne. The seventh issue sported a cover and interior art by the idiosyncratic Charlton workhorse
Pat Boyette.

Nice! :-)
ReplyDeleteThere were some very good 'Space:1999' strips in the British comic 'Look-In'. Interestingly, when it changed to the Year 2 format, they somehow forgot to alter 'Main Mission' to 'Command Center' and retained David Kano!
ReplyDeleteThey're all wonderful covers, but No. 1 really does set the series up with those stares out of frame and No. 5 does a great job of suggesting the drama of a decision, with the shared focus and the blown-up hand poised.
ReplyDeleteThe issue 6 story of Koenig in space without his helmet eventually ended up in the last WORLD DISTRIBUTORS UK annual for the series, which is now very rare to get. A great memory of a great series.
ReplyDeleteI always liked John Byrne's work. I never knew that these existed!
ReplyDeleteThe cover of issue 5 was borrowed for the cover of the Truckfighters-Gravity X album a few years ago.
ReplyDeleteWow the memories. I recall actually having issue 2. Very fun ENEMY MINE type story if I am remembering it correctly. I also recall the SPACE:1999 BW comic magazine. Man what a show there are parts of it I really like and parts that well...;)
ReplyDeleteI was browsing your site, most excellent. I was wondering where you got the pics of the Flash Gordon movie rocketships and if there are any more such pics? I've always wanted to make models of them but didn't any good reference pics.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the incredible work.
I honestly don't recall where on the web I found them. I stumbled upon them during a Googling expedition one day...
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reply regarding the Flash Gordon rocketships. Truth be told, some time back I came across a video someone posted on Youtube that I think must have been a behind the scenes DVD extra that come with the release of the Flash Gordon DVD that had pics showing the models of and other artwork from the movie. I wish I could find it again.
ReplyDeleteThanks again.
