These Are The Voyages...

45 years ago today, the starship Enterprise set out on its first five-year mission, and boldly took us all where no man had gone before. Happy anniversary to Star Trek - the original series. Without it, this blog wouldn't exist, and I'd be a completely different person.

  2. Pure awesome.

I've always been a big fan of TOS. I've got the series on DVD, as well as the animated series, and I have several (but not all) of the original movies.

TOS had a feel to it, a roughness, a badassedness (not even a word, but a meaning) to it that none of the followup series possessed.

A few months ago, I was able to see Leonard Nimoy speak at a University here in Boston. 3/4ths of the people in the room weren't even born when the show ended, but the love of Star Trek, especially TOS, was clearly evident. A hundred years from now, people are still going to be watching and enjoying that series.

  3. Star Trek: the yardstick by which all other science-fiction series are measured.

TOS will always have a special place in my heart. Growing up, I was "the smart kid," and I think we all know how hard it can be when kids pick on you for being different. Yet, when I was feeling the worst about myself and my situation, there was Mr. Spock. He was the smartest guy on TV, and not only was he accepted for that, he was celebrated. It really inspired me to achieve and to have the courage to be different.

Happy 45th Anniversary, Star Trek. Thanks for showing us the way.

  4. I created a cool video that explains what happened to the full size mock-up of the Galileo shuttle craft used briefly during the original STAR TREK series. You can find it at
