STARCRASH (1978) Lobby Cards/Press Stills
Here is a colorful selection of Starcrash promotional photos and lobby cards from around the world. I've been gathering these up for some time. Unfortunately, scouring the Internet for Starcrash material means putting up with a lot of "worst movie ever made" bullshit. Look, I'm not going to claim that Luigi Cozzi's Starcrash is a 70s sci-fi masterpiece (although I may privately think so, at times), but it is tremendous, Saturday matinee entertainment, and remains one of my personal favorite intergalactic epics of the era. (In fact, I'm listening to John Barry's score for the film right now!)

I fucking love this movie.
ReplyDeleteI also love this movie, besides Caroline Munro beats the panties off Carrie Fisher in any universe.
ReplyDelete"Caroline Munro beats the panties off Carrie Fisher..."
ReplyDeleteOh my. The images in my mind right now.... :)
I saw pictures of this movie years ago in Starlog and other mags of the day. Never saw it until I buckled down and purchased last year. There are some flaws, but the film makes up for any shortcomings with a fast pace, cool ships, lots of colors and Caroline Munro
ReplyDeleteMost of the haters are fanboys who don't understand the context or humor of this movie. Everybody agrees that it's a low-budget ripoff of Star Wars -- no one denies that. But I think that's one of it's biggest charms. It's one of the first films that Star Wars actually inspired to be made. It's pure joy to watch the Italians borrow some of the same elements that made Star Wars so ground-breaking. We've got overhead shots of spaceships, explosions, robots, hot women, pulpy villains, crazy dialog, lightsabers, insane costuming and great actors. Yes, with Starcrash we even get the great Christopher Plummer quoting his lines like it was Shakespeare (maybe THE greatest line in history -- you know the one I mean). And the soundtrack by the late great John Barry was awesome. The movie is a guilty pleasure to watch and it's definitely a cult classic to be enjoyed by a whole new generation of fans. It's unintentionally funny at times (thank you, Marjoe Gortner), but there are movies out now that deserve to be panned a lot more (cough - Suckerpunch - cough). The haters just don't appreciate the movie for what it tried to be...and they're just missing out.
ReplyDeleteWorst Film Ever! kidding! I actually thought I was the only one who enjopyed it!
ReplyDeleteIf NASA had astronauts like Caroline Munro (and spacesuits like that), I guarantee there would be a lot more interest in the space program.
ReplyDeleteThese are so great. I am going to have to repost them over at the Cave of Cool because my love for Caroline knows no bonds. Starcrash is terrific camp too - the battle of the hairdoes.
