I'm guessing from the logo and the game graphics that this Sega video game (in which the big boss is apparently the space probe Nomad from "The Changeling!") came out as a tie-in with Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan in 1982. As I've said before, my family never had an Atari game system, so I never paid much attention to game releases... but I sure would have gotten this! Did any of you luckier Star Kids have this?
I had a Trek ripoff game for Atari that was a strategy and shooter game in which you had to warp from system to system in this galactic grid to defend starbases. Your ship looked like the Enterprise top-down view. Think the other ship looked like a Klingon. I remember photon torpedoes...but not much more.
ReplyDeleteI've played the 2600 version, the C64 version, and the arcade version. They were okay games, though there was a great sit-down cabinet version of this in the arcades that made it really neat.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite old Star Trek game is probably still the version with different sectors and the ASCII short range sensor, where you had to hunt down the Klingon warships. I can't count how many versions of that game I've played.
Ha! I had that, with the joystick overly. My buddy had it as a PC game. Good times, good time.
ReplyDeleteWhat really strikes me, looking at this commercial, are the number of platforms hey released this for. Can you imagine a game today where they would try and make one playable over five formats?
ReplyDeleteI really don't remember seeing this one here in the UK. Shame, because I know I would've LOVED it! While we're on the subject of video games, does anybody remember the sit-in Firefox one that turned up in arcades in the early 80s? I seem to recall it used actual footage from the Clint Eastwood movie as a backdrop for the playable graphics - Very ahead of its time, and terrific to play!
ReplyDeleteDid anyone notice the Vulcan guy at the end of the commercial?
ReplyDeleteIt was Isaac from "Children of the Corn." LOL!!!
And Uncle Jash, I remember the Firefox game. It was one of the first games that cost 50 cents to play, so I didn't play it that often. But it was always next to Dragon's Lair and any of the other laserdisc video games.
Was there really a sit down version of FireFox that did that?! WOW! I am sorry that I missed that.
ReplyDeleteI can remember the one in my local arcade it cost 60 cents and was usually out of order on account of the fact that the LD players used dated back to the late 70s and were not all that reliable to begin with.If you want to re-live your misspent youth Mame has emulated Firefox and a few other LD games for your pc but be warned the chd file is around 12gb
DeleteSweet! Ernie Anderson!
ReplyDelete"Lau-nch Pho-tons!"
ReplyDeleteI think Nomad was doing the voice over :)
Thanks very much for the tip - I may well look into that! Since this thread is a Trek-related one, I just thought I'd mention Google's 46th Anniversary of Star Trek "doodle" which is up today. You've probably all seen and loved it already, but in case you haven't, check it out...it's too much fun to miss!
ReplyDeleteOne of the best 2600 games. Extended the life of my unit for a few months!
