News: BUCK ROGERS Season 2 DVDs Delayed

According to the fine folks at TV Shows On DVD, Universal Studios has postponed the release date of the stand-alone re-issue of Buck Rogers In The 25th Century - Season Two from November to January 8th, 2013.No reason has been publicly given for the delay.

As previously reported, Buck Rogers In The 25th Century: Season Two will contain all 11 episodes (13 hours) on four discs, presented in full screen video, English mono sound, and with subtitles in English, French and Spanish - at a suggested retail price of $24.98.

Amazon currently has it available for pre-order at $22.48 + shipping. (The Complete Epic Series is still available new, by the way, containing both seasons, for only $17.55. Go figure.)

  1. "Epic"? Not quite, but I still have fond childhood memories of this show.

  2. Hey - *I* didn't name it - that's what Universal called the DVD set!

  3. So this is supposed to be season 2, when they left Earth for parts unknown, yet the cover shows the first season costumes and New Chicago. Universal is so lazy most of the time, putting out some of the most careless DVD and Blu-ray releases.

  4. Even as a kid I was pretty disappointed with the 2nd series especially after it had started out so well with the pilot,I always really liked Hawks ship, but it really went down hill from there

  5. Are these HD re-masters or the same SD versions that have been floating around? It would be nice if they got upgraded into something nice and shiny and there's certainly an audience and market for them.

    1. They appear to be repackagings of the same discs that were previously issued as part of the The Complete Epic Series set.

    2. Not cool. HD just gives things a luster that would make me really want to really re-visit these as opposed to just skipping to the highlights. The remastered ST:TOS looks amazing (especially with the enhancements, purists be damned).

  6. I bought the original box set a few years ago that had both seasons, and they are on dual-sided discs. They released the original Galactica the same way, and several discs have already rotted in that set. Universal replaced 3 discs for me since they went bad. I expect the same to happen with Buck Rogers since they have a history at Universal of making poor dual-sided discs, and many reviews on Amazon also say their Buck Rogers discs are now unplayable.

So I bought the new reissue of season 1 when it was released, just because they are on single-sided discs, which should mean they won't have the bonding issue that the dual-sided discs are plagued by. This alone makes it worth getting the new set, although I hate giving them money twice for essentially the same product. The newer box had no additional extras of any kind, and still didn't include the original pilot episodes, only the movie. The discs were identical other than being single-sided - same menus, same episodes, same bitrate, everything.

And I agree about the packaging for season 2 - really lame how it shows imagery from the first season. At least it will be reasonably priced - $23 for 13 hours is a pretty sweet deal, and the episodes do look pretty nice. As far as the episodes themselves, I disliked the format compared to season 1, and some episodes were cringe-worthy. And poor Wilma - she deserved better treatment in year two. But still there were several good episodes.

I wonder why it was delayed? Maybe they're putting together some awesome extras. Yeah right! Galactica had tons of extras, but for some reason this series got absolutely nothing. And while I'm thinking about it, why isn't this on Blu-Ray since they are re-issuing the series? Oh yeah, quick cash-grab. Star Trek and Space:1999 are on Blu-Ray and look magnificent. Why put this out twice on DVD? They should have put some effort into this release and put on Blu-Ray - I can't imagine how nice this would look with all the colors and crazy sets. Oh well, I'll still get the DVDs in January since I'm a sucker for this show. My girlfriend even likes it.

  8. I'm completely happy with the complete series version on DVD I bought a few years ago out of the bargain bin. I think I paid something like $10 for it. A reissue in two separate volumes seems pointless to me. I most certainly won't be buying these.

  9. Guys, keep in mind as I mentioned above that the original release has known issues with the dual-sided discs separating, resulting in unplayable discs - it happened to me on 3 discs from their Galactica set - released on the same type of dual-sided discs. Universal has a known problem with this happening with their dual-sided discs. If you really love the show, it might be wise to invest in the new single-sided discs, which will not have this issue with separation. The original set is highly likely to be unplayable next time you go for them in a few years. Read the Amazon reviews.
