FLASH GORDON (1980) Hawkmen Teaser Art

I may be mistaken, but I believe that this poster by artist Philip Castle was the first piece of publicity art released for the Mike Hodges-directed Flash Gordon feature film in 1980.

I remember seeing this art of Vultan's Hawkmen attacking the war rocket Ajax, in Starlog and other genre fan magazines months and months before the film's release. I assume that it was a piece of repurposed pre-production art. In any case, I'm glad I finally found a decent scan of it....

  1. Apparently this was used as a poster (duh!) and banner in the summer of 1980.

One of the MBs I frequent had a few stories from members talking about seeing this poster in theatres while seeing Empire Strikes Back.

Ebay copies go for a ridiculous amount, too.

  2. Spectacular - thanks for digging this up and sharing it! This is my favorite scene in the movie. Whenever I look at this poster I can hear Queen's battle music playing in my head.

  3. I've never seen this artwork before, but it's pretty darn cool. I guess the first hint of the movie coming out was when I saw the trailer in theaters. But I would have loved seeing this at my local theater.

  4. Sorry to get off-topic, but is everybody aware of the passing of Maximilian Schell? He was Dr. Reinhardt in Disney's The Black Hole. Hoped to see an obit, here. He was/is my favorite cinematic mad scientist character of all time!

  5. I would LOVE to get the central part of that separated and blown up for a wallpaper. Any chance of getting a higher resolution to make that happen?

  6. Wow. Just found this site and I'm a child of the 70's/80's too (born in 69) Massive Star wars fan but love all the old sci-fi shows and movies of that era. Just working my way through your previous posts from the beginning!! Keep up the great work.

  8. I have never seen this poster before. It's pretty cool. I have heard that Sam Jones is going to reprise his role as "Sam Jones" in the sequel to Ted and that he may end up being Ted's roommate. I didn't like Ted that much, but the Flash Gordon scenes were hysterical and make the movie worth watching. However, if those scenes were missing...

Just a quick question are you ever going to get back to posting monthly space babes?

  9. It looks like it's one section of one of the international posters. Look here:http://space1970.blogspot.com/2011/11/flash-gordon-1980-international-posters.html
The top poster on the page in the upper left hand corner has what looks to be this exact image.

  10. Dude, I can't begin to express to you how in love I am with Brian Blessed, the LOUDEST MAN IN BRITAIN, and it all started with this movie. Up until that point, I'd always gone for the more slender and fey Englishmen, but seeing him in his hairy glory made me mad for English bears as well.

Did you happen to see the recent Aardman Animation film, "Pirates! Band of Misfits"? There's a part where the main character is filling out the application for the Pirate of the Year contest, and when he got to the question "How would you describe your Pirate Roar?", the loudest of possible options to tick was "Brian Blessed".

He's climbed Everest. I want to climb him.

    Your Pal,

    Storm

  12. This art appeared in Starlog shortly before the movie came out. I missed seeing Flash in the theater back in the day but well remember the corny TV commercials with the Queen music. My best friend actually did see it and complained that everything in the movie was colored red, so that was my initial impression--that it was too "red" (!).
