Coming Attractions: RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (2011) Teaser Trailer

I'm posting this decidedly non-70s trailer out of a sense of duty; the original Planet of the Apes films and TV spin-offs, not to mention all the merchandise, were such a big part of the Seventies sci-fi landscape, that even a modern re-imagining seems like it should be covered here. That said - I can't say I'm very impressed with the trailer....

  1. Hmm. Not sure if I'm feeling the more realistic apes. Part of the charm of all of the Planet of the Apes films was the "man in a mask" aspect.

  2. Looks like a thoroughly average modern science thriller. I'm amazed they would associate the Planet of the Apes title with this, when it looks and feels nothing like those films. At all.

  3. It wasn't very interesting, informative, or exciting, but I still think it will be better than the Tim Burton version.

  4. First tip is the atrocious writing:
"...We call it--" dramatic pause, "the Cure."
    Cut to random people, "GASP!"

OMG this is going to be bad. But could it be worse than the Tim Burton/Markie Mark disaster from ten years ago? That would be difficult.

  5. Ummm... looks a bit dull. They're never going to top psychic mutants living underneath New York singing, out of tune, hymns to an atomic bomb. There just doesn't seem to be any imagination (other than that, nicked from a video game or a comic) in genre flicks any more.

  6. I'm a big APES fan and I'm not so quick to dismiss this new movie. Maybe it's because I didn't positively HATE the Burton re-imagining (as he called it). I didn't like it, but I didn't hate it either. Let's all wait and see.

  7. Looks like they're going for straight-up horror: instead of "The Birds," it's "The Apes." Not much apparent similarity to "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes," but the idea is close enough that they apparently want to count it as a remake. It would probably be better to let this stand on its own, unless they're trying to reboot the whole Planet of the Apes series (good luck with that...)

  8. At least I know now they didn't evolve, it was a drug.

  9. I don't care how good/bad this movie looks, I'm still going to see it: it's A NEW PLANET OF THE APES MOVIE, for Ceasar's sake!

  10. First off I don't care for the animal exploitation/experimentation angle. Don't want it in real life and I prefer not to endure it in the movies I watch.

But once past that I'm intrigued. The thinking ape(more than it is, that is). What might have actually evolved if we weren't such a "successful" species. There are possibilities here.
