Let's recap: as I have stated in previous posts, the coolest 70s toy ever was the Mattel Space: 1999 Eagle Transporter. The second-coolest toy of the Space: 1970 era was Kenner's 18" Alien. And the third...
Kenner's Bionic Bigfoot from the Six Million Dollar Man.
Unlike the terrifying-but-desperately-coveted Alien, I did own one of these beauties for a while, although, oddly, I never had a Steve Austin action figure. This meant that Bigfoot usually battled my Mego Superman or teamed up with the Planet Of The Apes Gorilla Soldier against Captain Kirk. Man, those were epic backyard confrontations! Bigfoot wasn't particularly well-articulated, but at a towering 15" he was damned imposing - especially when pitted against the smaller-scale Megos.
On a related note - which Bionic Bigfoot did you prefer - Ted Cassidy or André the Giant?
Andre all the way! (Although Lurch Cassidy was awesome as well.)
ReplyDeleteLove your blog BTW!
Andre the Giant, all the way! He was over 7 feet tall, 400lbs, and really looked like a creature! Scary, and cool for a 7 year old child to see!
ReplyDeleteMan, I loved the whole Big Foot storyline on Six Million Dollar Man when I was a kid!
ReplyDeleteBoth Ted Cassidy or André the Giant were awesome character actors - perfect for parts like these, so I don't think I could chose.
ReplyDeletewow! i didn't know there was bigfoot figure...i had the steve austin figure and maskatron, but no bigfoot.
ReplyDelete*definitely* prefer ted cassidy. no contest there!
I didn't know that they switched. Was it because of Ted Cassidy's illness?
ReplyDeleteI doubt it, as Cassidy replaced Andre. Andre played the character in the original two-parter, Cassidy took over for the remaining appearances.
ReplyDeleteI had Steve Austin, Oscar Goldman (with the awesome 'exploding' briefcase) and the OSI Headquarters playset, but I did not have the Bigfoot. Man, that must've dominated figure collections!
ReplyDeleteSadly, I sold all of my stuff (well, my mom did) many years ago (in the pre_ebay days) at a garage sale before I knew how much collectors would covet such things.
CR
I would have to add my two cents and say that the Evel Knievel stunt cycle was the greatest most indestructable toy ever. Number two was Oscar Goldman with exploding briefcase and the superhero figures from Mego.
ReplyDeleteI had a teddy bear, this would have freaked me out as a kid.
ReplyDeleteYep, got one o' those. Up in mom's attic with Steve and Oscar and Maskatron and....
ReplyDeleteAnyway, have to go with Andre on this one.
I'll go with Ted Cassidy as my favorite Bigfoot. I had a Six Million Dollar man figure back in the day, but no Bigfoot, thought I did want one.
ReplyDeleteI don't agree with having Bigfoot be third greatest toy ever above Steve Austin himself. Steve should be number three.
Andre's version scared the living crap outta' me as a 3rd grader
