MAN FROM ATLANTIS (1977) Promo Art

Here's an unusual bit of promotional art for the Man from Atlantis television series. I'm not sure where it was used (although I'm guessing it was a magazine cover or interior illustration), nor can I quite make out the signature. Still, it's pretty cool!

If anyone has more information on this piece, please post it in the comments - I always like to know where this stuff comes from!

  1. Does the Man From Atlantis come under Sci Fi or SuperHero? I vote SuperHero.

  2. Like the "bionic" shows, I've admitted that it's on the cusp.

He has no secret identity, and his "powers" are simply his natural abilities. He's the alien among a human crew of explorers... (would Spock be a "superhero?" Maya?)

  3. It is a very thin line on this show, especially once it became a TV series. I always viewed him as an Aquaman ripoff, but in a positive sense. Part of the lure of the series was thinking this was as close to an Aquaman/Submariner show as I'd ever see on TV. And yes, I did like knockoff toys when I was a kid too.

I can't quite make out the artist's signature, but the style looks familiar.

  4. Spock, No. Maya Yes. What's the difference? Don't know.

  5. I bet Patrick Duffy is glad he didn’t have to wear that skimpy black Speedo.

  6. The likeness of Pat Duffy looks good, but I wonder who that whisper-thin fellow is, swimming behind him ( did the Man from Atlantis have his own Man from Atlantis he kept on the downlow? ).

  7. Totally digging your site, Christopher. I don't have any info on the illustration, but I'm totally voting on it being "Superhero," rather than anything else. We recently reviewed the entire series on my site, and in pretty much every episode they were randomly throwing in some new crazy-assed random ability ("This week he's psychic! Next week he can talk to squid! The week after that he is not, nor has he ever been psychic, but he can travel through time!")

It started off as Star Trek underwater, but quickly became something for people who thought Namor: the Sub-Mariner was too intelectually taxing. And MAN, talk about cast attrition! Duffy was the *only* cast member who made it from pilot to finale.

  8. Looks like it could be an Atari game.
