News: Hanna-Barbera's SPACE STARS (1981) Coming To DVD From Warner Archive

Well, it's a good thing there's been a lot of home video news lately, as I've been too busy with other projects to do much substantial posting here on the blog. Among many other announcements at San Diego Comic Con last week, apparently the folks at Warner Archive teased an upcoming release for the 1981 Saturday morning cartoon series, Space Stars.

As I wrote a while back: with Space Stars, Hanna-Barbara jumped on the post-Star Wars boom by reviving and repackaging their 60s outer space heroes Space Ghost and The Herculoids (mixing both classic episodes and newly-made installments) with two other space-themed cartoons - The Teen Force and Astro (from The Jetsons) & The Space Mutts - for an hour-long, themed programming block.

I don't believe an official release date has been announced yet, but I'll try and stay on top of it and let you all know as soon as I find out.

  1. Oh man, I've spent YEARS trying to figure out what the cartoon was I now realize is called TEEN FORCE. All I really remembered about it were the flying space-cycles, but I do recall enjoying watching it as a kid Sunday mornings on USA Cartoon express. Thanks for the info on this practically lost cartoon series, and now I can't wait for the DVD release!

hey........darrell mcneil here. i was one of the layout artists & assistant animators on 'space stars' back in 1980 and i want to correct a slight point made by mr. mills. ALL of what you saw in the '81 show was NEW. NONE of it was repurposed. you may be confused beacuse, when the show was originally produced in 1980, (then held back a year because of various strikes, among other things), it was originally planned as a 90-minute show that DID include 8-min recut '60's jetsons episodes, along with a second set of all-new herculoids and the educational segs, (which will be included and seen for the FIRST TIME ANYWHERE on the dvd set.) i'll be commenting on that, along with ss writer donald glut, on a future format to be revealed later......but keep watching the (space) skies!

    2. My mistake, Darrell. As I've noted elsewhere on this blog, by '81 I was watching less Saturday morning cartoons, preferring to sleep in. :)

My memory was that original Space Ghost and Herculoids toons were mixed in with the new material, but obviously I was misremembering.

I may have been remembering the Jonny Quest and Jetsons packages a few years later that did mix older and new episodes together. (I am right about that, though.... right?)
