GALAXINA (1980) Advertising Art

It's been a while since I've posted anything here relating to the 1980 Dorothy Stratten vehicle, Galaxina, a decidedly underwhelming intergalactic comedy from Crown International Pictures. But I recently came across the cool foreign one-sheet above, and thought it'd be fun to share. For other Galaxina posters, go HERE.

And, while Galaxina is an undeniably bad movie... I enjoy revisiting it every once in a while. The screenplay is sophomoric and the direction leaden, and any movie that features Avery Schrieber in a major role demands a certain amount of derision, but it does possess those 70s miniature space effects that I enjoy, the late Ms. Stratten is delicious eye candy, there are a couple of decent Chris Walas-designed alien creatures (both featured in the art above) and... well, actually, that's about all this movie has going for it.

For those who might be wondering, I did pick up the Galaxina / Crater Lake Monster  Double Feature  Blu-ray from Mill Creek Entertainment several months ago, and must report that while the film is presented in widescreen and HD, it's derived from an inferior print and appears to be a simple standard-def up-convert, with no evident remastering done on the transfer. There are no extras, either. If you should happen to be a fan of the movie, you're better off hanging onto - or picking up - the Galaxina special edition DVD that BCI Entertainment put out a few years back. The transfer is better, and there are plenty of extras. Although technically out of print, it's still available for under $20.

  1. The first poster illo is a ripoff of a Vampirella comic book cover and the second is familiar too, though not sure where from

  2. I'm sure the artist intended it as an "homage." :)

  3. I have never seen that poster for this cool and campy little film. Thanks!

  4. I, too, think of this as a terrible movie but unlike you I can't imagine watching ti again. When I caught up with it last year i was stunned by its dullness. There is nothing deadlier than an unfunny comedy. By the way- how did THE CRATER LAKE MONSTER look on Blu?

  5. Well, Crater Lake Monster looked better than I've ever seen it on video, but that's not saying much. It's another film I only watch for the effects - in this case, Dave Allen's stop-motion animation.

  7. As a wee one, I was captivated by the Galaxina poster and commercials. And, once the era of video stores rolled around, I'd stare at the box art any chance I could.

And you know what? I've still never seen the movie. I don't want to ruin it's "purity" in my mind, I guess.

  8. I have GALAXINA on laserdisc, even. Can't say it's good but I had a crush on Dorothy Stratten and still find the 'Blue Star' gags funnier than a reasonable person should.

    Plus there's the Batmobile cameo.

Did you pick up the comic series?

  9. Hydra Miniatures paid homage to the first poster with one of their Retro Raygun Valkeeri miniatures, here.

  10. Speaking of the Galaxina comic (from the long-defunct Aircel Comics company,) here's a link to the covers...

My buddy Mike Shoemaker wrote them, with art by Leonard Kirk (no relation.)

The writer's site can be found here...

The storyline was set earlier in Galaxina's life.

  11. Wasn't Galaxina released the very day Dorothy Stratten was murdered, only to be pulled out of theaters and released again later? I seem to remember seeing commercials for it around the same time Flash Gordon was playing.

    Blue Star! (Ah-AHHH!)

  12. Oooh boy, GALAXINA. How can you have a movie with a Playboy Playmate of the Year.. and NOT get her naked?

In regards to the blu-ray, I would have to say that it is better than the DVD, though not by much. It "is" blu-ray quality, at least to the degree that you can tell that it is off of a print (as opposed to an upconvert, like the awful THE HILLS HAVE EYES Image blu-ray. Ugh). CRATER LAKE MONSTER on the other hand? Good lord, it looks FANTASTIC. The movie is still pretty boring, but it is near crystal clear. Check out the reviews here:
