McDonald's STAR TREK (1979) Kid's Meal - Klingon Ad
A while back, I posted a commercial for the McDonald's "Kid's Meal" fast food promotion that the famous burger chain did in conjunction with 1979's Star Trek - The Motion Picture. Here's another commercial for that same promotion - featuring a Klingon "dad!"
Apparently, these were the very first McDonald's "Happy Meals"...
Thanks for that. I remember getting one of those Happy Meals at the time (and seeing the movie). The box had a picture on one end of the transporter malfunction where the crew members shrink and disappear - scary stuff. IIRC, the box in those days was the "toy" - nothing extra included.
I think these indeed are the first McDonald's Happy Meals (although predated by Burger Chef's Fun Meals, which eventually all came to have goofy monster-movie themes), but I also vaguely recall a circus-animal themed Happy Meal that came out around the same period.
I remember these all too well. Before my parents took me to see Star Trek-The Motion Picture, we stopped at a local McDonald's and they purchased me one of these cool Happy meals. This brings back a lot of wonderful memories. 1979 was definitely a great year for science fiction.
I see now from the commercial in your older post I was wrong about there being no prize. From the comments it was an iron-on (more ephemeral than a plastic toy).
Is that Shatner doing the Klingon commercial voice-over? Or just someone who sounds like him to me?
Franklin's comment about Burger Chef's Fun Meal predating the McDonald's Happy Meal is absolutely correct. Adding to that fact, in 1978 Burger Chef offered a variety of Star Wars-themed Fun Meals, beating McDonald's to the punch on the whole big sci-fi movie tie-in promotional thing, too.
I also had the box with the artwork depicting the transporter malfunction. As a kid, I was shocked by the comic and the fact that people died in the transporter. And the prize was a few iron-on images. I promptly had my mom put them on my Star Trek Underoos. LOL
did this come with a viewfinder? I remember getting a happy meal back in the late 70s and it came with a star trek viewfinder. I wish I still had it. It would probably be worth a fortune

ReplyDeleteAwesome commercial, btw!

ReplyDeleteI think the announcer in the commercial is Gary Owens (Laugh-In...Space Ghost...Blue Falcon...etc.)
ReplyDeleteI have one of these still, minus the toy it came with sadly!
