INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1978) Art By Mike Saenz

This atmospheric rendering of the cast of Phillip Kaufman's 1978 remake of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, appeared in the sixth issue of Fantastic Films magazine, cover-dated April, 1979. The artist is Mike Saenz, an illustrator and graphic artist whose work has appeared in numerous comics, magazines, graphic novels and computer games.

In fact, in the 80s, Saenz pioneered the use of computer-generated art for comics with Shatter, a series published by First Comics, and the graphic novel, Iron Man: Crash.

  1. In that image, Sutherland's hair looks suspiciously like those nefarious pod-tendrils....

  2. This movie failed to register with me back in the day. Too slow and everyone already new the pay off. The 50's original built the mood so much better. I never bought into it as a "message" movie about communism thou. It was a very subtle alien invasion story, much more intriguing than most "blow up every landmark" movie we saw back then and today.

  3. Sutherland and Adams look a bit poorly in this, don't they? Still, it's a nice pic for one of my favourite films.
Used to really like 'Fantastic Films' magazine btw. It only seemed to appear in the UK occasionally though

  4. This is a great illustration. I remember pestering my parents to let me see this, until they finally gave in, after a warning about nightmares. They were right. I saw plenty of things that creeped me out as a kid, but this one just pushed it a bit for me. I was spooked for a while. Ahh, the things you could get away with before PG-13. I still listen to the fantastic Denny Zeitlin score pretty regularly. Cheers!

  5. Do you remember those black and white line posters (on some sort of poster board) you could buy with the markers included and then you color it in? This poster reminded me of those. I had a Close Encounters one and a Star Wars one.

    Good Times....

  6. I think the 70's version holds up rather nicely these days, I caught it on cable not that long ago and was entranced yet again. Still a great film. The original that much better, and the 90's remakes not so bad either.

  7. Little known fact: Director Phillip Kaufman was originally set to helm the aborted Star Trek: Planet of Titans movie, and while that particular project never materialized, he was able to get Leonard Nimoy for the Body Snatchers remake.
