#1 Movie In America!

Thirty years ago, anyway. That's right - Spacehunter: Adventures In The Forbidden Zone (in 3-D), starring Peter Strauss, Molly Ringwald and Michael Ironside, ruled the boxoffice on this weekend in 1983! Just thought that was worth noting. Hope you're all having a great weekend!

    1. I love Spacehunter. When I saw it in '83, the theater was packed and appreciative (even though the 3-D projection was screwed up). My girlfriend and I both liked it more than Return Of The Jedi because it didn't have muppets and teddy bears.

  4. I have a very fond memory of my dad taking my brother (@ age 10) and I (@ age 11) to go see this at the duplex (The other movie, IIRC, was FLASHDANCE). My memory (and I'll freely admit that this might be embellished by nostalgia) is that the 3-D was really good- much better than about 90% of the 3-D today.

Anyway, even without the 3-D it's a fun movie with a very cool blue-collar, Heavy Metal, "Junkyard Planet" look.

  5. It was good, but it was no Metalstorm (I saw that movie twice in the theater)

    1. You forgot the subtitle: The Destruction of Jared-Syn

      Must never forget the subtitle...

  6. Re-watched it some years ago and all I could think of was how Michael Ironside's villain was such a sitting duck on that thing, he is not very menacing because he can't really move all that well? But the movie itself, I watched it tons of times whe I was about 9, still enjoy it today. I mean, here's a movie about a guy going to rescue these hot babes who were vacationing on some space hotel that blew up? Ha! Only in the 80's!

  7. I have long lauded this movie as one of my all-time favorites. Though I never realized it did so well upon relsease (I lived overseas on a military base, so my viewing was a bit behind the rest of the world). This one inspired many a Star Frontiers game for me.

  8. I can honestly say I was one the those who attended the opening day weekend when the movie came out. Waited months to see it after reading about it in Starlog or some other magazine. At 15 years of age I was not disappointed.

  9. I watched a couple of episodes of Defiance on SyFy and this movie was the first thing I thought of.

  10. I enjoyed this movie a whole lot more the second time around than when I first saw it in 3D, which I found to be distracting and irritating. Seeing it in good ol' 2D, I was able to finally appreciate what a goofy, fun movie it was.

  11. It's on Netflix streaming now, guess what I'm going to watch over Memorial Day weekend!

  12. The "industrial wasteland" set was the old Burrard Bridgeworks where they used to fabricate bridge trusses. Today the site is Bridge Studios where Stargate was made.
Some of the vehicles were still around in the early 2000's. They used to make appearances around Vancouver.
