Just about a month ago, I posted some ITC Entertainment publicity material for Alien Attack, one of the four TV movies cobbled together from episodes of Gerry Anderson's Space: 1999 for 80s syndication.
Well, here's some of the promotional art (I haven't identified the artist as yet) and other material the company created for their Cosmic Princess telefilm, which was comprised of footage from two of the better Year Two episodes featuring Catherine Schell's character Maya: "The Metamorph" and "Space Warp." Enjoy!
Sideburns on a woman just don't work for me.
ReplyDeleteThose aren't sideburns.
DeleteHad a massive schoolboy crush on Catherine Schell, and I can see why. Even Brian Blessed seems smitten
ReplyDeleteThe alien eyebrows that Ms Schell wore over her natural brows are a Keith Wilson creation called "Octopods", the curved dark pigmentation on her "cheekbones" is of course makeup. But in the Space:1999 series it was possible genetic pigmentation -or makeup applied according to the planets culture, which "lightened up" or used sparingly in subsequence episodes. It was probably because she was so long away from her native world eating "Earth Food" not getting the vitamins she needed affecting her cheekbone appearance. But in actuality of course it was because the ITC suits in New York complained that the makeup made her ears and cheeks "look dirty". Shows you narrow mentality of the time! Not very pro science fiction! In reality, I see women who are pre diabetic who actually have this kind of marking on the cheek, so it has some rooting in reality!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous poster!! Thanks for posting, Christopher. I've never seen it before.
ReplyDeleteAs a huge fan of the show, I find the "artistic license" taken to be quite funny. I love that they gave Maya wings like she's a bird lady! LOL!! And it's so obvious that the artist blended together two different photos of John and Helena. Helena is sitting down and John is standing, yet the are both at the same height. Plus, that's Helena's season two uniform but John's (mis-colored) season one uniform (note the belt!). And does he have his hand on her knee? The odd way he's holding the stun gun looks strange as well. Still, it's an awesome piece of artwork. Seeing things like this (especially ones I've never seen before) always make me very happy!
The first black and white photo is very interesting in that Catherine is not in costume or make-up. And the way the boa is just kind of tossed across the front of her is very wierd. She looks absolutely stunning though. I notice the creatures behind her are the same ones used at the top of the poster.
I really love the second photo of Maya and Mentor. The only thing that stikes me about it is that it's taken on the Command Center set. Unless I'm remembering wrong, Mentor never actually stepped foot onto Alpha.
Nice post, Christopher. I love all the stuff you dig up! Keep up the great work.
Yeah, I never liked the Maya concept from the very start. Catherine is a SUPER ACTRESS (loved her in 'Piri'..), but it's one of the main reasons I had trouble with Season 2.
ReplyDeleteYes, Scott, those were just ITC promo shots without any basis story-wise. The Space:1999 Catacombs site has VIRTUALLY EVERYTHING every produced for 1999, a huge and awesome site.
I never liked coupling the episodes to make movies.. I know dozens of series did this (UNCLE, etc..) and it was standard distro practice for further syndication, but I never liked 'em personally. The original episodes are best shown episodically as originally intended.
