Despite what many might think, I don't really own a whole heck of a lot of Space: 1970 era merchandise.
Most of the toys, model kits, comics and trading cards I had as kid are long gone, and I never really collected action figures back then (man, I wish I had!). I don't buy vintage stuff - outside of old paperback novelizations I'm missing - and I sure don't buy much new stuff other than DVDs/Blu-rays of the films & shows I cover here (who could have guessed back in the 1970s that owning the actual movies & TV shows would be cheaper than the toys, etc.?). I simply don't have the sort of money that modern collectibles usually cost.
But I was in my favorite media store tonight (Bull Moose Music in Waterville, Maine) picking up a couple of this week's Blu-ray releases, when this item caught my eye: The Art Of Star Wars Comics 16-Month 2013 Calendar.
I needed a calendar for my home office, and this one was perfect - 12x17" oversized reproductions of 13 of my favorite Marvel Comics Star Wars comics (my absolute favorite Star Wars continuations of all). Suggested retail price is $15, Bull Moose had it marked at $10, and with my store points, I got it for just $5. Sweet.
The reproductions are nice and sharp, and every illustration pulls me back to when Star Wars wasn't yet an institution (or an industry), and those monthly Marvel issues were almost the only new stuff a fan could enjoy between movies.
If you'd like one, but can't find it locally, here's the Amazon link: (12x17) Star Wars Art of Comics 16-Month 2013 Oversized Wall Calendar
Ah, the cover alone takes me back. Might try and get me one of those
ReplyDeleteThat looks great-a must have purchase. In the UK, the STAR WARS calenders are so poor quality these days...
ReplyDeleteAwesome calendar. I have the full run of the Marvel SW series, and that calendar looks like an essential purchase.
ReplyDeleteWith Star Wars now being owned by Disney, and Disney also owning Marvel... I'm betting we might see SW comics being published by Marvel once again as soon as the current licensing agreement with Dark Horse expires.
Would you believe I just bought this same calendar today at Walmart? Over by the posters and calendars. I was so stunned when I saw it, I immediately grabbed it.
ReplyDeleteThat would make a great Christmas present for myself!
ReplyDeleteThis is a fantastic calendar! I got mine a month ago at my workplace. I about shrieked like a girl when I saw all-exclusive Marvel covers (not that DH Comics are bad, but old school is where it's at). Plus a Dave Cockrum-inked cover to boot!
ReplyDeleteI saw this at Walmart. I was tempted, but turned off by the slight alterations done to the covers. And idea why they took out "Marvel Comics Group" from some of the covers? I thought maybe it was a copyright thing, but some of the covers in the calendar do have the words "Marvel Comics" on them.
ReplyDeleteSpotted this at my local WalMart a couple days ago and was over the moon about it. I collect all kinds of stuff from all eras, but I have an especially soft spot for the "Space 1970" era Star Wars and Battlestar stuff, and it's so rarely represented in new merchandise anymore. This is going on my Christmas wish list for sure!
ReplyDeleteI, too, grabbed this from my Wal-Mart the other day as soon as I saw it. While I like the covers they used, there are so many other awesome covers they could have used (like Fenn Shysa from The Last Mandalorian storyline, or the cover to The Last Jedi [issue 149, I want to say...])
ReplyDelete@The Badger King, if the issues you're mentioning are from any of the Dark Horse comics of recent note, color me uninterested. That Marvel cover is EXACTLY what put it on my wishlist for Christmas. The DH stuff is disposable, classic Marvel is the way to go!
