2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968) International Posters

Today I present a selection of theatrical one-sheets for Stanley Kubrick's 1968 mindtrip, 2001: A Space Odyssey... the film (that, along with Planet Of The Apes) kicked off the Space: 1970 era of genre flicks. Most of these used Bob McCall's art in various configurations, but there are a few cool regional variations in here, too. Enjoy.

  1. This is the definitive SF movie.
Like so many of your Star Kids this was the one that made me a lifelong fan of SF. We just knew this was the future. And although I was too young to know it at the time it was far and away the most technically accurate -even today its is far better done than most. Not that I understood the ending at the time though.
Some of the stuff- like the telephone booth on the LEO space station bring a smile today- but a very warm one. And I really loved the "Zero G Toilet" instructions. Having read a lot of the Apollo era spacecraft checklists and equipment descriptions they really did have instructions like that.
On the other other hand- those ugly suits worn in the lunar conference room get an Ugh! But then- anyone who worked in the real MOCR had about the same fashion sense.
Of the posters I remember most of the artwork shown- seeing these again just does it for me. But I am not certain what that one with the stylistic eyes and nose is all about. Is that a Russian promotion?
Where was the one with the image of M31 from? Using stock astro images was hardly unusual but 2001 is one movie where Kubrick and Clarke just didn't do it.

  2. Great post, thanks.

Someone gave me the last version of the "wheel" poster you show and it's framed on the wall behind me as I type. Although I love it, I wonder why they made the Earth red in that version? It looks like Mars.

  3. Great post.

This film, perhaps more than any other, made me want to have something to do with the movies. To this nine-year-old, 2001: A Space Odyssey was magic.

  4. These are all great posters. I like the last one the most because it's mysterious, just like the movie. Thanks for sharing.

  5. There is a Kubrick exhibit at LACMA currently that has a 2001 section containing amongst other things, some very cool prop pieces from the film.
Among them some surprisingly well preserved apeman full head masks, a spacesuit from the Moon party that visit the Monolith and what looks like a mold of the Starchild.
Along with all of his other films there's a section on A Clockwork Orange.
Well worth checking out of you're in the LA area.
