News: Gerry Anderson's JOURNEY TO THE FAR SIDE OF THE SUN (1969) Coming To Blu-Ray

Space: 1999 creators Gerry & Sylvia Anderson's 1968 feature film, Journey To The Far Side Of the Sun (a/k/a Doppleganger), starring Roy Thinnes (The Invaders), is coming to Blu-ray disc in the U.S. on April 7th from Universal.

From the Press Release:
Classic sci-fi adventure and suspense has never been more exciting as when you Journey to the Far Side of the Sun! One hundred years in the future, two astronauts are sent to uncover the secrets of a “duplicate” Earth on the other side of the sun. When they crash land three weeks earlier than they had planned, they must embark on a life-or-death mission to determine whether they have arrived back home or on the strange mirror world. This imaginative space adventure offers a journey few will ever forget!
It's an interesting movie, with a dark tone and overall aesthetic that is very similar to Anderson's subsequent TV series, UFO. In fact, a number of the props, costumes and musical cues from the film (most notably the "futuristic" automobiles) showed up on UFO a year or two later, along with a few cast members.

So far, no word on any extras, but I wouldn't really expect any from a Universal catalog title. The Journey To The Far Side Of the Sun Blu-ray is already available for pre-order at Amazon.

  1. A very good movie. I have it on DVD so I probably won't upgrade but for anyone who hasn't seen it the Blu-Ray should be a must-buy.

  2. I have a copy but will definitely be getting this. The opening was classic British. From the international intrigue to the unique camera equipment. When I first saw it as a kid at the Pershing Theatre in El Paso, Tx. I didn't like the ending but see it in a totally different light as an adult. The beginning credits are badly dated but has some nostalgia for me. I grew up learning to use those punched tape ,sequential tape drives and the infamous "Do Not Fold, Spindle, Or Mutilate" IBM punch cards. DaveM

  3. This movie freaked me out as a kid. Having seen UFO first I always felt it was a darker version of that series.

  5. This is a movie I saw several times as a child on the Sunday noon movie on WKBW channel 7 in Buffalo N.Y. I was too young to understand that it was British and had a certain "mod" style to it and that it was related to Space 1999 in that both came from Gerry Anderson. I just found it unique and always fascinating to watch and then try to recreate when I was playing. I have it on DVD as well. It would be awesome if they bothered to do some special features on it for the Blu-ray.

    1. I probably first saw it on WKBW as well. It has all of Gerry Anderson's strengths and weaknesses. One problem is that everybody seems so stern and serious all the time. That gets tiring after awhile.

The spacecraft design is interesting but doesn't make much sense when you look at it closely. Look at the spacecraft that the astronaut docks with--the rocket engines are mounted in a spot where they couldn't really get fuel. It just doesn't add up.

  6. An Australian Bluray release is on its way featuring audio commentary by Gerry Anderson and the alternative British titles (Doppelganger).
