New Space: 1970 Poll: Heroes & Heroines

Hey, Star Kids, it's time for another reader poll! Our last poll, way back in November, asked whether the Space: 1970 blog should include the super-hero shows and movies of the era in its sci-fi coverage. The answer was a resounding "YES!," so I've been mixing some super-hero material into the site over the last few months.

As a follow-up, this poll asks: "Which 70's LIVE ACTION Super-hero Show Or TV Movie Was YOUR Favorite?" Note, I'm only asking about non-animated television programs and made-for-TV movies/specials, so no Superman - the Movie write-in votes, please. You'll find it over in the right-hand sidebar, right on top. You only get one vote, so make it count!

If I forgot to include something, be sure and let me know here in the comments (as if I'd expect anything less).

  1. I would want to add MAN FROM ATLANTIS, but I suppose it's a dodgy conceit that he's a superhero.

  2. Oddly enough, I'd ahve to say the Dr. Strange TV movie.

  3. Man From Atlantis, like The Six Million Dollar Man, Bionic Woman, Invisible Man etc., is "on the cusp." In this particular case, I chose to limit the poll to a.) characters directly derived from super-hero comic books (including the non-costumed Hulk), b.) characters that had distinct super-hero identities/costumes (i.e. Isis, Electra Woman).

  4. One might make the argument for the pilot film "Exo-Man" (a paralyzed scientist builds a suit that allows him to walk and fight crime). http://youtu.be/a0KSqelmgN8

I need to make a plea on behalf of the Adam West 1966 "Batman" series. Yes, it was campy and silly, but it was still extremely popular in the 1970s, maybe just as much as "Star Trek." It's a difficult call: this series did almost as much damage to TV superheroes as it helped their popularity. But, I still think that cutting it out of the running is not entirely fair.

  5. Re: Exo-Man - that's what the "Other" option is for.

As for Batman, it may still have been on the air in syndication in the 70s (indeed, that's when I first saw it), but unlike Star Trek, in my opinion (and as this is my blog, it's the only one that really matters), it was more distinctly a 60s phenomenon.

Star Trek was vastly more popular in the 70s than it was in the 60s, and I'd argue that it was more timeless, as well.

  7. Wonder Woman sadly has not aged as well as the Incredible Hulk has. I though of Monster Squad as Super Heroes when I was kid, but I can understand the above criteria that Chris added in.

  8. The Hulk was favorite during the original run, but my wife and I have been getting WAY too much enjoyment out of watching seasons 2 and 3 (especially the mid-seasons section of both) of Wonder Woman recently. Here's an example...

  9. I voted for "Wonder Woman." Lynda Carter was so perfectly cast and so beautiful. Growing up, I used to look forward to watching the show each week. I was in love. I also really enjoyed "The Incredible Hulk," which I'm sure is the better show. I also remember watching the George Reeves "Superman" TV show in syndication during the 70s and loving it. By the way, I think your blog is terrific!

  10. I also had a huge crush on Lynda Carter but I voted for the 'Hulk', which was a far far better show.
BTW, there's a nice feature on Spider-Man through the ages on Yahoo News today. It includes a good call from the folks at Yahoo for a DVD release of the Hammond series
