Disney News was an official studio magazine that was published exclusively for members of the company's "Magic Kingdom Club" for many years, beginning in 1965. In the 90s it became
Disney Magazine. This 1979 issue sports yet another piece of dynamic promotional art for the studio's outer space epic,
The Black Hole. Cool stuff, huh?
'The Black Hole' easily remains my post-'Star Wars' favourite. I can see why it wasn't a big hit though. A bit too spooky to be a proper family movie. Odd, of course, when you consider it was Disney. Personally, I loved the slightly darker tone. Outer space has never looked better either
ReplyDeleteWow, The Black Hole-liked it very much. Too bad not enough people made it to the box office. It was cool stuff, actually thought it was a little creepy. The all star cast was great to see especially with Ernest Borgnine. Not to mention V.I.N.CENT and the robot fight scene. Good times
ReplyDeleteC'mon Disney lets get that Blu-Ray out STAT!!
ReplyDeleteSeconded! The Black Hole is currently my most-desired HD upgrade....
ReplyDeleteThis art was also used for the cover of Alan Dean Foster's novelization of the movie, I believe. I'm a big fan of TBH... when you consider how many sci-fi flicks in the post-Star Wars boom were trying to be, well, Star Wars, this one stands out with a unique tone and identity. The ending doesn't make a lick of sense, but up until the last 10 or 15 minutes, it's a masterpiece of atmosphere that's topped only by Ridley Scott's Alien. IMHO, of course. :)
ReplyDeleteConsidering how much effort the studio put into the film (which was pretty lavish for its time), it's really too bad Disney still treats The Black Hole like a redheaded stepchild. I mean, yeah the movie didn't meet certain expectations back in 1979, but I think there's more than enough of us out here who love the film enough to warrant a really bangup Blu-Ray release.
ReplyDeleteThe Black Hole was also a favorite of mine. It's currently on Vudu in HD if you are into streaming at all. It looks good but one problem with the older effects heavy films in HD, it's all too easy to get distracted by composite anomolies.
ReplyDeleteIf you're into the music, Intrada released an expanded digital CD of this score last year. I have it and it's great! You can purchase it here. http://store.intrada.com/s.nl/it.A/id.7229/.f
