SPACE: 1999 (1975) TV Guide Feature

From the July 5, 1975 issue of TV Guide, here's a two-page photo spread feature previewing the alien faces of the first season of Space: 1999. Anonymously penned in the magazine's usual snarky style, this article was probably my first glimpse of Gerry Anderson's epic series. I remember being very eager to see the show after reading this...

  1. Sweet! I remember reading that article. My family were obsessive readers of TV Guide, reviewing the whole week ahead and circling what we wanted to see in the upcoming week. I remember waiting anxiously the week before the Fall Preview came out so we could see what new series would be on.

Love your blog, by the way.

  2. Speaking of Fall Previews, I must have over a dozen from the mid 70s to early 80s.. They're GREAT to see current stars looking young and geeky on shows that no one remembers..

As for 1999 coverage, jeez, I was hungry for ANYTHING in print to devour.. I vividly recall just seeing seeing the first episode or two, then walking into the dimestore and seein' the Eagle model for the first time. I remember being so surprised to see it so quickly, usually products take another 6 months or so to it middle America. I immediately begged my Mom for it and got it a month or so later for Christmas.

I also got my last mego (Green Arrow) and some AMT Trek models, but that Eagle easily was THE STAR of my Christmas of 1975.

    Easily.

More so for Year One, it will forever be 'my show'.

    Great post, sir.

  3. Snarky is definitely the word. You would think they were talking about Lost In Space here the way they dig on the show before it even aired. Unfortunately the show never did get much respect from the media back then. Thanks for sharing this with us!
